April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
Help Ralston House in April: Plant a Pinwheel Garden
Ralston House, the child advocacy center in Colorado’s First Judicial
District, is recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month in Jefferson
County on behalf of the 857 children who were interviewed at Ralston
House in 2011. Nationally 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys will be sexually
abused before their 18th birthday.
Ralston House child advocacy center is a nationally-accredited nonprofit agency that helps children and teens who are suspected of being sexually or physically abused. We work with police departments, social services and district attorneys to provide forensic interviews, forensic sexual assault medical exams and support services. Comprehensive services at child-friendly Ralston House help child victims and their families begin the healing process after traumatic experiences.
Pinwheel Gardens - Be a Pinwheel Gardener and Help Plant Hope
Bright blue pinwheels are a symbol of child abuse prevention awareness across the nation. Ralston House will be going to organizations around Jefferson County asking them to plant gardens of pinwheels in April to support the children in the community who have suffered abuse and to support efforts to keep children safe from abuse. Each garden demonstrates to child victims and their families that the community supports them. It says to children, “the abuse is not your fault. We are on your side, we believe you, and want to help you heal.”
Ralston House is Planting Hope with its gardens. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for Ralston House services from gardens and from selling individual pinwheels and to raise awareness of child abuse in the community. Two large gardens will be planted, and we are asking the community to plant up to 20 smaller gardens.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
1.
Contact Ralston House to pick up (or we will deliver) a garden kit at Ralston House
(containing 100 pinwheels, signage, pamphlets and collection envelope.)
2.
Sell pinwheels at your location for $5 each. Contributors may take a pinwheel home
if they wish in addition to those they sponsor for the garden.
3.
Before the end of April, “plant” the pinwheels in a “garden” at your location along with
the provided sign explaining the project.
4.
Write a check to Ralston House for the money collected. Your goal will be to raise at
least $250. If you are unable to make this goal, simply return the unsold pinwheels
to Ralston House.
5.
Email us a photo of your garden and we will post it on our web site!
